Cross River Rail (QLD)

Delivering greater efficiencies to a city changing project

Brisbane’s new underground, Cross River Rail (CRR) is a new 10.2km rail line from Dutton Park to Bowen Hills and includes 5.9 kilometres of twin tunnels under the Brisbane River and Brisbane CBD, designed to change the way people travel across the whole of South East Queensland.

The project included construction of four new underground stations at Boggo Road, Woolloongabba, Albert Street and Roma Street. It delivered upgrades to eight above ground stations and created three new stations on the Gold Coast line. The introduction of the European Train Control System (ETCS) added efficiency to the inner-city rail network, enhancing the safe operation of trains while increasing capacity.

Our role

The initial set up of this highly complex commercial project saw the delivery under duress. MBB project and commercial controls specialist were engaged to reset the operating rhythm, delivering cost and schedule confidence through the implementation of a Project Management Office (PMO) for Queensland Rail.

Our services

Our services included:

  • Establishment of PMO project controls services
  • Project controls management
  • Cost estimating and control
  • Planning and scheduling
  • Stakeholder management
  • Contract administration advice
  • Client reporting
  • Advice on project management systems including PRISM and Primavera
  • Government advisory on Total Outturn Cost risk modelling for the provision of State owner risk
  • Ownership of the schedule and cost risk model process.

As part of our engagement, we also developed the iSCRa risk modelling process which could be used to more accurately plan for risk events.
