Helping develop the operational foundations for ongoing mine success

Dugald River is one of the world’s top 10 zinc operations. The mine is estimated to have a mine life of 20+ years, processing an average of 1.7 million tonnes of ore per annum. The operation predominantly produces zinc concentrate, with by-products including lead and silver.

Dugald River ore is mined underground, then extracted to the surface and treated on-site. Concentrate is then transported to the Port of Townsville via rail.

The successful commissioning of the Dugald River project was achieved ahead of schedule and under budget, with the first production of finished zinc concentrate leaving Dugald River on 8 November 2017.

Our role

MBB project controls specialists were engaged to both lead the project controls team and implement all project controls, including schedule, cost and change control systems to underpin the development of the mine.

  • Overseeing a team of seven project controls personnel
  • Managing planning, cost control, change management, and accounts payable
  • Providing in-depth analysis and recommendations for corrective actions to senior management, ensuring timely and informed decision-making
  • Managing the performance of the EPCM contractor
  • Overseeing change control and earned value processes to maintain project alignment and efficiency
  • Coaching and mentoring the project controls team
  • Educating the wider team on project controls processes, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and knowledge sharing
  • Project reporting, including presentations to steering committees and board
  • Monthly reporting, ensuring transparent communication of project status and performance metrics
  • Maintain CMS forecast accuracy including variations and progress claims against existing packages
  • Maintain performance/budget progress reports in an accurate and timely manner
  • Reconciliation between CMS and SAP
  • Supervising the handover of packages from EPCM Contractor to Owner-managed packages as a result of a key strategy change.
